Peptides are short chains of amino acids — the same molecular building blocks that make up proteins. While proteins are typically defined as chains of 50 or more amino acids, peptides are shorter, generally ranging from just 2 to 49 amino acids linked together.

This size difference matters in research settings. Because peptides are smaller and more specific than full proteins, they're often easier to synthesize, study, and modify — which is part of why they've become such a significant area of laboratory and scientific research over the past few decades.


How Are Peptides Classified?


Researchers generally group peptides by their structure or role in biological systems being studied, including:

  • Signaling peptides — studied for their role in cell-to-cell communication processes

  • Structural peptides — studied in relation to tissue and connective structures

  • Synthetic research peptides — lab-created peptides designed to mimic or modify naturally occurring sequences for study purposes
